Jimmy survives brutal return

Chelsea's Dutch striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had plenty of time to reflect during the summer after Holland missed out on the World Cup finals.

But he was too busy trying to regain fitness to take a proper break.

His season ended gloomily when he was almost anonymous in Chelsea's FA Cup Final defeat by Arsenal because a calf injury which needed surgery a week earlier was still troubling him. It also meant he missed winning the Golden Boot, losing out to Thierry Henry.

But now Hasselbaink has recovered and is raring to go. He has been linked with a move to Barcelona but his commitment to

Chelsea was evident in their bad-tempered 3-3 draw with Dutch side Roda JC on Saturday. He scored twice but was jeered and abused by his compatriots after a series of spats with Roda defenders and referee Dick Jol.

He said: 'I came back here to play in a friendly but was kicked a lot and that's irritating. But I need competitive games like this to get my fitness and confidence back.'

Enrique De Lucas scored his first Chelsea goal with a fine volley. Southampton manager Gordon Strachan was livid after the friendly against Dutch side Utrecht which the Saints lost 2-0.

Strachan said: 'If we play like this against Middlesbrough next week we are in deep trouble. There was no spark or inspiration. 'On this showing we are not ready for the start of the League season.'

Charlton winger John Robinson revealed he had to fight back the tears after celebrating 10 memorable years with the club at the weekend.

The Wales international almost broke down in the tunnel with his two children just before the game.

Robinson's father passed away a few months ago and he is dedicating his testimonial year to him. Charlton drew 2-2 with Porto of Portugal.
