James set to keep number one spot

12 April 2012

David James looks set to retain his place as England's number one goalkeeper.

Although Robert Green is primed to start his sixth successive international on Saturday when England tackle the Ukraine in the industrial city of Dnepropetrovsk, Fabio Capello is still leaning towards James as his first-choice stopper.

"I think I know who it will be," said Capello. "The same as before."

By before, Capello meant his forceful statement prior to the August visit to Holland, at which point Green had only played two matches, in one of which - against Andorra - he barely touched the ball.

At the time it was assumed James was the first choice and the same is true now, although Green is certainly catching the eye.

"I have been following Robert Green," said Capello.

"I saw a lot of his games with West Ham and when he has played with us, he has done well, with confidence and without fear.

"I have confidence in my keepers. We have had some problems before now. But with me they are always in good form."
