Injury fells Jack The Giant

13 April 2012

Jack the Giant, second favourite for the Totesport Trophy at Newbury on Saturday week, has met with a setback that will rule him out for at least a fortnight.

However, the six-year-old, who has won three races over both hurdles and fences this season, is expected to recover in time to take his chance in the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on 13 March.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: "I don't know exactly what he's done, he's not lame and I'm still hopeful he'll be able to run in the Ryanair Chase. We'll see what happens over the next couple of days and we'll keep everybody posted before we get things happening on the exchanges."

Henderson had also considered running him in the williamhill.co.uk Handicap Chase at Doncaster on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the entries for the four novice hurdle events at the Cheltenham Festival were revealed today.

The Anglo Irish Bank Novices' Hurdle, the traditional Festival curtain-raiser on 11 March, has attracted 130 entries headed by Jessica Harrington's ante- post favourite Cork All Star.

The Ballymore Properties Novices' Hurdle the following day has 156 entries, while the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle has 106 for the three-mile contest on 14 March.

Alan King won the JCB Triumph Hurdle with Katchit last year and his ante-post favourite Franchoek will need to see off a big challenge from across the Irish Sea as they make up 32 of the 91 entries.
