In-form Goosen targets Augusta win

13 April 2012

The odds on Retief Goosen winning his second major at this week's US Masters have come tumbling down after his four-stroke victory in the Bell South Classic in Atlanta.

In the last 10 months the 33-year-old South African has won seven tournaments. He missed the cut at Augusta last year when hindered by a pulled chest muscle but said today: "I'm definitely more excited about going there this time. My confidence is much higher and I know I can play under the pressure and in tough conditions."

Goosen finished on 16 under par yesterday, with Sweden's Jesper Parnevik runnerup on 12-under after a closing round of 65.

Meanwhile, Carl Pettersson, of Sweden, claimed his first European Tour victory when he beat David Gilford at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off in the Algarve Open at Vale de Lobo in Portugal. They had tied on two-under in an event reduced to 36 holes because of bad weather.
