India on top

England saw off the threat of Virender Sehwag, but India still reached 84 for one in the first 15 overs of their World Cup Group B match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Sehwag fell to Tim Bresnan for 35, an acceptable outcome for England given the India opener's reputation as a game-breaker.

But Sachin Tendulkar was still in attendance, joined by number three Gautam Gambhir, meaning India had ominous power to add after choosing to bat first.

With Stuart Broad unavailable due to a stomach upset, James Anderson endured a morale-sapping first over.

He might have had Sehwag three times as the opener somehow chipped and edged unconvincing shots just out of the fielders' reach. Instead, Anderson conceded eight runs and India were immediately off to a flier.

Sehwag continued with his instinctive aggression until Bresnan, in his first over after replacing Ajmal Shahzad at the north end, got the breakthrough. The opener tried to guide a little width from a short ball down to third-man but did not get quite enough bat on it and was well caught by a diving Matt Prior.

The introduction of Graeme Swann to bowl in tandem with Bresnan in the powerplay worked well enough.

Prior could not get his gloves anywhere near a half-chance for a catch when the advancing Gambhir, on 18, edged one from Swann that went quickly on with the arm and resulted in four runs.

But Bresnan then distinguished himself by bowling a maiden to Tendulkar.

England appeared to have a modicum of control but could do with more wickets, preferably starting with that of India's master batsman.
