Harrington fears Monty battle

13 April 2012

Padraig Harrington was today hoping that lightning doesn't strike twice in the Cisco World Match Play Championship at Wentworth.

It was in the semi-finals of this tournament last year that the Irishman was crushed seven and six by eventual champion Colin Montgomerie.

Now the two men are set to meet again, this time in the last eight, after Harrington beat first round rival Bob May, of the United States, six and five.

The Ryder Cup player knows that most observers have already written him off against a player who is chasing his fifth victory in six appearances at Wentworth.

"You assume that Monty is going to play to a certain standard at worst," said Harrington.

"You know that if he plays well you're in trouble.

"He likes the golf course, he's done so well here. To be honest I haven't done so well, so I give him home advantage."

Sergio Garcia plays Ryder Cup teammate Lee Westwood, Europe's top money-earner this season, after beating Australian prospect Adam Scott two and one in a scrappy match.

Retief Goosen meets triple Match Play champion Ernie Els in an all-South African quarter-final. Goosen recalled the last time he clashed with his Alfred Dunhill Cup team-mate in match play competition was when they were juniors some 15 years ago.

"I lost then," said Goosen, "and I'll be the underdog this time. But every dog has his day."
