Harlequins appoint former rugby league star Sean Long as assistant coach

Former Great Britain and England rugby league star Sean Long has joined Harlequins as an assistant coach.

Having won every major honour in a decorated league career, Long joins Harlequins from St Helens and will work on the team’s attack with Nick Evans and Mark Mapletoft. Head of rugby Paul Gustard said Long had chosen Harlequins over other Premiership options, adding: “As a player, Sean was a stand-out amongst his peers and perhaps his greatest strength, despite all his talent, is his competitive desire.

"We can see with the performance of St Helens this year the impact he is now having as a coach with their attack as they compete at the top of Super League and enter into the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup after a 40-point thrashing over Wakefield."

Long said he “can’t wait” to join Quins, who finished fifth in Gustard’s first season in charge, on July 8, when they return for preseason.
