Hammond puts RGS back on track

RGS High Wycombe made Twickenham their second home in the Nineties and they are just two games away from another appearance in the Daily Mail Under 18 Final after a 32-21 victory over Bishop Wordsworth, Richard Hill's old school, from Salisbury.

England full back Jon Hammond scored the first and last of RGS's six tries, three more coming from centres Pierre Ascobad, John Ray and Rob Perkiss as they led 22-7 at half-time.

Right wing Idrusi Labri scored immediately after the break followed by Hammond's second effort and, at 32-7, RGS were cruising. But Bishop Wordsworth responded with two late converted tries with RGS lock Anthony Peck in the sin bin for persistent infringement.

Coach Colin Tattersall said: 'To say, I'm delighted with our progress is an understatement. It's a real surprise since we had only four players back from last year. But they've gelled as a very competitive team and, once you get to the quarters, anything can happen.

'We took Bedford Modern's unbeaten record last Saturday, winning 17-10, and they're still in the competition. We face Brighton College or John Fisher at home in the New Year for a semi-final place.

'Fisher will be favourites and we edged them earlier this season.'

Just as impressive as RGS have been St Peter's, Gloucester, for whom fly half Ryan Lamb scored four tries as they ran Exeter College ragged before winning 53-5.

They face champions Campion or Whitgift in the quarters, but elated coach Dave Pointon said: 'Bring anyone on.'

Intriguingly, St Peter's Under 15s travel to RGS next Tuesday to battle for a place in their last eight.
