Give me Greene, says Chambers

Ian Chadband13 April 2012

Dwain Chambers today trained his sights on a London showdown with Maurice Greene, the world's fastest man, after being crowned the king of European sprinting in Munich.

After racing to a magnificent 100 metres triumph at the European Championships in a lifetime best 9.96sec, the Finsbury Flyer reckons his first major triumph has given him fresh confidence for a series of post-Munich clashes with Greene, the Olympic champion and world record holder.

The pair meet in Zurich next week before Chambers plans to mark his homecoming with a victory over the American and his countrymen at the Norwich Union Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on 23 August.

"It's going to be a great confrontation now I've proved to everyone, not least myself, that I'm a championship performer," said Chambers, after banishing memories of his trauma at the Commonwealth Games when he pulled up with cramp in the final. He triumphed in a new championship record while defending champion Darren Campbell took bronze.

"I've beaten Maurice in two out of three this year and if I can go out and repeat this same sort of performance in front of my home crowd, it's only going to raise my confidence more."

Crystal Palace will also welcome a glamorous new star in the shape of 22-year-old local Dulwich athlete Jade Johnson, a part-time model who last night became the first British woman since Mary Rand in 1962 to win a long-jump medal at the European Championships.

Carrying British hopes tonight are Daniel Caines, in the 400m, triple jumpers Jonathan Edwards and Phillips Idowu, and Kelly Holmes in the 800m.
