Gabriel is hero again after Euro absence

13 April 2012

Gabriel Agbonlahor's impressive week continued as he helped get England Under 21s Euro 2009 campaign off to a flying start in Podgorica.

The Aston Villa forward scored the second goal against Chelsea on Sunday and did the same at the Pod Goricom Stadium after Nedum Onuoha opened the scoring. South Africa-born Andrew Surman then came on for his Under 21 debut to tap home in stoppage time.

Impressive display: Gabriel Agbonlahor

Agbonlahor's commitment was questioned in the summer when he missed the Euro finals after the FA could not contact him to confirm his call-up, but he made amends last night.

Stuart Pearce's men opened the scoring in the sixth minute after skipper Steven Taylor headed back across goal, Agbonlahor got a touch to lob the goalkeeper and Onuoha headed home.

Agbonlahor added a second in the 10th minute. Theo Walcott slid him through and the forward finished confidently. England had to wait to the very end for the third. Substitute Surman struck after Dexter Blackstock headed into his path.
