Nicolas Burdisso: Winning is everything

10 April 2012

Argentina defender Nicolas Burdisso has told his team-mates winning is all that matters heading into their World Cup opener against Nigeria in Johannesburg.

The Albiceleste take on Nigeria at Ellis Park on Saturday before facing Greece and South Korea in their other Group B games.

"I give more value to starting the tournament with a win than to playing well," said Burdisso.

"There is a lot of anxiety and to start with a win would mean a lot to us.

"We must win our first game and although it will be difficult, we have to know that a good result is all that matters."

With the likes of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Diego Milito in Argentina's roster, there is no doubt Diego Maradona's are among the favourites to lift the World Cup.

However, Burdisso has urged the fans and his team-mates to keep their feet on the ground.

"There is no question we are candidates to win the tournament," said the Inter Milan defender. "We have very strong players in the team but that doesn't mean anything.

"We must win our first game and then draw some conclusions."
