England going out to create their own World Cup history, says Jordan Pickford

1/53

Jordan Pickford says this England squad are going out to make their own history after their quarter-final win over Sweden put the Three Lions into a World Cup semi-final for the first time since 1990.

The Everton goalkeeper, who wasn’t born until four years after Paul Gascoigne’s tears in Turin, put in a man of the match performance in Samara as headed goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli saw England comfortably past Sweden.

Now just two wins from being World champions, the next step is a semi-final meeting with Croatia in Moscow.

Pickford, though, insists the side are taking the tournament just one game at a time.

“I wasn't born the last time England reached a World Cup semi-final,” Pickford told BBC Sport.

“We have always said we would take one game at a time and we can go on and create our own history.

"We knew it was going to be difficult, we know what Sweden bring to the party and we managed it very well. After I made that first save from Marcus Berg with the header that was me set for the rest of the game.”

England v Sweden: through the eyes of the fans

Of the support in Samara, he added: "England fans are different class and we really enjoyed playing in that atmosphere."
