England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be out of the World Cup after suffering suspected ligament damage in the 2-2 draw against Ecuador.

England manager Roy Hodgson confirmed after the game that he 'feared there might be some ligament damage.'

A scan today will reveal the extent of the injury after the midfielder limped off on 63 minutes after overextending his knee in a tangle with Carlos Gruezo.

Afterwards, Hodgson said: "Oxlade-Chamberlain is the one that bothers. His knee buckled under the the challenge as the player turned into him.

"He'll have a scan tomorrow, I'd imagine. When we've had the scan, we'll know more."

The pacey winger put in an encouraging performance, and was one of England’s biggest threats, so an injury to the 20-year-old would be a major blow for Hodgson.

In the second half in particular, the Arsenal player took the game to the Ecuadorian defence, including a driving run that led to a good chance for goalscorer Ricky Lambert.

With Danny Wellbeck still to convince, and Hodgson known to be a big fan of Oxlade-Chamberlain - whom he started in the first game of Euro 2012 - the youngster will be pushing for a starting place against Italy if his injury is not serious.

The England manager burshed off concerns over midfielder Jack Wilshere, who left the pitch with cramp after 87 minutes having taken a blow to the shin.

Hodgson explained: "It was cramp. We took them off for those reasons alone."

There were no other injury concerns for England, for whom Ross Barkley and Lambert impressed.
