West Ham's Olympic Stadium opening game: Europa League spot hands Hammers scheduling headache

West Ham were discussing their options today after their Europa League qualification created problems around their first match in the Olympic Stadium.

Manchester United’s FA Cup Final win over Crystal Palace on Saturday ensured that West Ham qualified for the third qualifying round of the tournament, with matches due to be played on July 28 and August 4.

West Ham had already planned for the first match at their new home to be a prestige friendly, together with an opening ceremony, against Italian Serie A champions Juventus on August 7, although the club have insisted that will still go ahead.

An added complication is that UK Athletics has an event scheduled at the stadium between July 22-24, with seven days required after that to set it up for football.

West Ham have ruled out playing the tie elsewhere, so their most likely option if they are drawn at home first would be to request that UEFA reverse the draw.
