Back in Action: Downing returns for West Ham

Stewart Downing and Cheikhou Kouyate return to the starting line-up as Andy Carroll retains his place in attack for West Ham.

Downing, so impressive this season in a central role for the Hammers, makes his first appearance since injuring himself while on international duty with England earlier this month.

Newcastle are the form team in the Premier League - having taken 16 points from their last six matches, a haul only Chelsea can match - arrive in east London to take on a West Ham side without a win in three matches, having won four of their previous five.

Winston Reid is suspended, while Diafra Sakho (back) and Enner Valencia (knee) miss out for Allardyce’s team.

Teams in full

West Ham Starting XI: Adrian, Jenkinson, Cresswell, Tomkins, Collins, Noble, Kouyate, Downing, Amalfitano, Jarvis, Carroll

Substitutes: Jaaskelainen, Demel, O'Brien, Vaz Te, Zarate, Cole

Newcastle United Starting XI: Elliott, Janmaat, Haidara, Williamson, Dummett, Colback, Tiote, Gouffran, Sissoko, Ameobi, Ayoze

Substitutes: Alnwick, Anita, Cisse, Cabella, S.Taylor, Riviere, Armstrong

Speaking in his Standard Sport column this week, Allardyce pointed out that both he and Magpies boss Alan Pardew were backed for the sack at the start of the season, but both have proved the doubters wrong.

"If the bookies had been right before the season started, both West Ham and our opponents at the Boleyn Ground tomorrow, Newcastle, would be under different management by now," wrote Allardyce.

"It hasn’t turned out that way and if our run of positive results was especially welcome, Newcastle’s current form - with six successive victories - is even more spectacular and a credit to Alan Pardew and his staff."
