West Ham v Manchester United team news: Michael Carrick starts as makeshift centre-back

Michael Carrick started as makeshift centre-back as David Moyes made six changes for Manchester United's return to Premier League action at West Ham.

The midfielder was named in the heart of defence alongside Phil Jones, while Alexander Buttner came in at left-back.

Juan Mata, Darren Fletcher, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa were the other changes from the 3-0 Champions League win against Olympiacos, while West Ham brought in Matthew Taylor and James Collins at Upton Park.

West Ham: Adrian, McCartney, Nolan, Tomkins, Carroll, Taylor, Noble, Collins, Demel, Diame, Downing.

Manchester United: De Gea; Rafael, Jones, Carrick, Buttner; Mata, Fletcher, Fellaini, Young; Kagawa; Rooney.
