West Ham United have signed Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Darren Randolph on a free signing.

The Birmingham stopper, who kept 12 clean sheets in the Championship this season, will arrive on 1 July as a free transfer with a statement on the club website confirming that he will be in "long-term competition" with current number one Adrian.

Randolph's spell at Motherwell saw him twice voted into the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in 2011-12 and 2012-13 before a move to St Andrews, where he only missed one match for the Blues.

Speaking to the Hammers' official Randolph, who has represented the Republic of Ireland in basketball and football, said: “My initial reaction to joining West Ham is excitement.

“It was a tough decision turning down Birmingham's offer of a new contract because of the second part of the season we had and the team we had built.

“They are a great group of lads and staff but I felt like I couldn't turn down the chance of joining a club like West Ham. Everybody wants to try and get to the top of their profession and I'm no different.”

The goalkeeper's form saw him earn a call-up to the Irish national squad in 2011 and he made his debut against Oman the following year. His performance against then world champions Spain saw the keeper, who remains eligible to play for the USA until he makes a competitive appearance for Ireland, draw praise for a fine save from Santi Cazorla.

West Ham's season begins on 2 July after the club qualified for the Europa League thanks to their performance in the Premier League Fair Play rankings.
