West Ham can stay up, insists Anton Ferdinand

West Ham's 1-0 win over Sunderland may not be enough to guarantee their Premier League status but Anton Ferdinand has no doubts that his former club will survive.

Ferdinand, whose sudden departure for the north-east was one of the main contributory factors in former manager Alan Curbishley's resignation and subsequent successful compensation claim, saw enough at Upton Park on Saturday to be confident that West Ham will be safe this season.

Ferdinand said: "The way they handled us impressed me considering the pressure the players must be under at the moment.

"I don't know why they are in their position near the foot of the table. I haven't seen them live but whenever I've watched them on TV they have looked a capable side apart from that 3-1 defeat by Wolves."

Ferdinand, who followed his brother Rio through West Ham's famed youth academy, still has an obvious soft spot for his former club.

He added: "Everyone knows I didn't want to leave West Ham but because of financial circumstances, I was told I had to go. The contract I had been offered was withdrawn so that told me I wasn't wanted here."

Brazilian Ilan, who scored the goal which earned West Ham a point at Everton, was on target again in the second half, prodding in after Carlton Cole had headed down Manuel Da Costa's free-kick.
