Real Madrid star Angel di Maria insisted that Argentina 'more than deserved' their extra-time victory over Switzerland, which secured their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Level pegging at the end of 90 minutes, the match looked set to be decided by penalties, only for Di Maria to slot home past the impressive Diego Benaglio in the 118th minute, following some fine build-up play from captain Lionel Messi.

"It wasn't me, the heroes are 23 players and the technical staff," Di Mario told reporters after the match.

"We gave our lives, our souls. I think the victory is more than deserved."

"We always tried to play," he continued, "we just made one mistake in the first half that allowed a one-on-one with [keeper Sergio] 'Chiquito' Romero."
