David de Gea may have gone home with the Player of the Year award from Manchester United’s end-of-season ceremony, but it was manager Louis van Gaal who stole the show.

Upon his arrival at Old Trafford last summer, much was made of the Dutchman’s theatrics behind closed doors, the blow away lines in the dressing room, the one-liners in the press conferences.

It’s fair to say that, to date, the 63-year-old has been somewhat reserved compared to his time ay Bayern Munich.

Until now.

On Tuesday night, Manchester United held their annual end-of-season awards. Hosted by Jim Rosenthal and Hayley McQueen, the Player’s Player of the Year award was handed to De Gea by Van Gaal.

On his way back to his seat Van Gaal, he returned to the stage to tell a rather bizarre tale.

“I want to say something,” he said. “Pay attention to the manager – Ryan Giggs said to me, and he is always right but in this case particularly right. I have said to you – you are the best fans in the world but tonight I was a little bit disappointed and I shall say why.

“I have seen a lady who plays the saxophone fantastically. Give her big applause.”
