Harry Winks has praised Christian Eriksen’s professionalism and says everyone at Tottenham is relieved the Dane stayed put.

Eriksen will remain at Spurs until at least January after failing to secure a move before Monday’s European transfer deadline.

The 27-year-old playmaker, in the final year of his contract, has said he wants to ‘try something new’ and is interested in joining Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Asked if the squad was relieved he had stayed, team-mate Winks said: “Yes, of course. Christian’s a fantastic player, there’s no doubt about that.

"He’s been one of our most impressive performers over the last few years. Christian’s a top person and whatever he decides, that’s up to him.

"All we can say is how well he’s performed for us this season and how professional he is. He’s fantastic.”

Spurs have already signed a potential long-term replacement for Eriksen in Giovani Lo Celso, but they also considered Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes in the summer.

However, Sporting’s president Frederico Varandas claims their bid, worth a total of €65million (£58m), included clauses he felt unable to accept.
