Italian job: Erik Lamela could return to Serie A

Roma are considering a move to take Erik Lamela back from Tottenham, according to reports in Italy.

The Argentine playmaker left the club to join Spurs in the summer of 2013 for £30million — a club-record fee for the north Londoners — but he has struggled to find his best form in the Premier League.

Lamela suffered with injury in his first season and even though he has played regularly this term under countryman Mauricio Pochettino, the 22-year-old is still searching for his first Premier League goal.

His sensational “rabona” strike in the Europa League tie against Asteras Tripolis was one of the highlights of the season, yet he has rarely found consistency.

Lamela has started to settle into English life and given the price Spurs paid for him, it would take a similarly hefty offer to prise him away. It is also doubtful whether chairman Daniel Levy would be prepared to cut his losses this early.

There is little chance of Lamela leaving White Hart Lane in January but if he cannot impress in the remainder of the season, Spurs would listen to offers. As well as Roma, Inter Milan are monitoring the situation following the return of Roberto Mancini as their manager.
