Tottenham transfer news: Moussa Sissoko flies back for Italy vs France game after deadline day drama

The past 24 hours for Moussa Sissoko have had a touch of the Jack Bauer about them.

The 27-year-old has jetted back to Italy ahead of tonight’s friendly, having been allowed to leave the French squad yesterday to complete a move away from Newcastle United.

The deal would go down to the wire, with Spurs finally confirming Sissoko’s signing – worth up to £30million, though Spurs will stagger their payments – after the midfielder posted a picture on Twitter holding the club shirt with three minutes to go.

But Everton were in the running, also, and looked set to claim his signature after Spurs saw an opening £16m offer rejected by Newcastle.

Ronald Koeman’s side had a bid accepted, and there was talk that, prior to Spurs matching it, the Toffees had laid on a private jet to whisk Sissoko off to Merseyside, having travelled to London.

His whereabouts was a strong indication of where his preference lay, with the prospect of Champions League football all too tempting.

Sissoko has since said that Spurs and France captain Hugo Lloris played a crucial role in the deal.

"I spoke with Hugo Lloris,” Sissoko told the club’s official website. “He told me this club is amazing and everything is here for me to do well, play some good games and fight with the best teams in England.

Sissoko is set to feature this evening at the at the Stadio San Nicola in Bari. Kick-off is at 20:00 BST.
