Harry Kane has broken Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year with his Boxing Day strike against Southampton.

The Tottenham striker scored his fifth hat-trick of 2017 at Burnley on Saturday to go level with the former England, Newcastle and Southampton No.9, and moved past the division’s all-time top goalscorer with an effort against his former club on Boxing Day.

While Kane has surpassed Shearer’s record for a calendar year, his Premier League tally of 260 remains a long way off - and Kane has insisted that he’s not thinking about reaching that remarkable landmark just yet.

"Of course you dream about it, but I'd be silly to look that far ahead I think," Kane said. "I've still got a long way to go. A lot can happen in football.

"Hopefully I can stay fit, stay sharp and we'll see what happens. Maybe if I get to 200 and I've still got a few more years left then I'll start thinking about it.”

The goal against Southampton also saw Kane move level with Lionel Messi as Europe's top goalscorer in 2017 for club and country (excluding friendlies), with the two forwards on 54 for the calendar year.
