Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt believes Spurs have their best chance to win the league in 55 years this season because no one expects them to actually triumph.

Mauricio Pochettino's men have impressed this season, and the team currently sit in second place in the Premier League standings, five points behind leaders Leicester and level with fierce rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham can boast one of the best defensive and attacking records in the top flight at the moment, but will come up against a tough test this weekend when they travel to play fourth-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite few expecting Spurs to beat the likes of Leicester, Arsenal and City to the Premier League title this season, Tottenham legend Mabbutt - who captained Spurs' 1991 FA Cup winning team - believes the lack of pressure on the north Londoners is why they could come out victors this year.

"The opportunity is there for us. We were close a number of times in the early 1980s, fourth in the Nineties and but we’ve not had such a good possibility for a long time," he told The Mirror.

"I think you only have to look around the club to realise what it would mean for this team to win the Premier League this season.

"You see the pictures on the wall in every part of the stadium from that 1960/61 double winning team to realise the esteem that team is held in.

"They are still heroes today, the fans can still name that team from one to 11 and these players would be legends if they could repeat that.

"They’ve got a great chance because no one actually expects them to do it. Even Leicester doing so well has made it an unusual season because the spotlight is on them and Tottenham have been creeping up on the rails.

"They have now got a group of players growing and maturing as they go.

"It’s a young group, they’ve got a brilliant dressing room spirit, great camaraderie and the manager must take so much credit."

He added: "We still don’t want to get carried away and no-one expects them to win the title. But they now have a wonderful opportunity."
