Tottenham have handed fans a boost by confirming that Harry Kane's latest ankle ligament damage is not as severe as the injury which kept him out for 10 games earlier this season.

The England international was injured early on in Spurs' 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall on Sunday, with supporters fearing the worst after losing the striker for six weeks earlier this season to a similar problem.

But despite announcing that Kane faces another spell on the touchline after damaging his right ankle, Spurs have confirmed that the striker is unlikely to miss as much football as he did beforehand.

Spurs tweeted: "We can confirm that @HKane sustained ligament damage to his right ankle during Sunday's FA Cup win against Millwall.

"The injury is similar to the one suffered by the forward against Sunderland in Sept last year, however it is not considered to be as severe.

"Harry will continue to be assessed by our medical staff while he undergoes his rehabilitation at our Training Centre."

Tottenham face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on the weekend of April 22, Arsenal at home in the Premier League eight days later, and Manchester United – for what could be the final fixture at White Hart Lane – on May 13.

Standard Sport reported earlier on Monday that Kane hopes to feature in at least some of those matches.

The 23-year-old will miss Sunday’s home game against Southampton and England’s fixtures against Germany and Lithuania later in the month, while the league matches against Burnley, Swansea, Watford and Bournemouth may all come too soon.
