Tony Adams: Arsene Wenger's financial principles are to be 'admired', but Arsenal's tactical balance is not right

Arsenal legend Tony Adams insists that Arsene Wenger's transfer market principles should be admired, but has called on the coach to improve his tactical approach.

Wenger has repeatedly been frustrated in the summer transfer window, missing out on Jamie Vardy, Gonzalo Higuain and Alexandre Lacazette as he seeks to improve his forward options.

Leicester star Vardy turned down a £20million move to north London, while Higuain opted for a £75m move to Juventus before Lyon turned down a £29.4m offer from the Gunners for Lacazette.

However, former Gunners captain Adams has told ESPN FC that the Gunners' problems are still on the pitch rather than off it after seeing Wenger's men pick up just one point from their opening two Premier League games.

"I admire Arsene for sticking to his financial principles, although I wish tactically he could get the balance right between defence and attack," Adams said.

Despite a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening day followed by a goalless draw at champions Leicester, Adams has backed Arsenal to find their rhythm as a number of Euro 2016 performers such as Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud get back to full fitness.

"We have a lot of players to come back in, and it was a good point last weekend away to the reigning champions," the Sport Director at Chinese Super League club Chongqing Lifan FC added.

"As for the match against Liverpool, you always do get some funny results in the first game of the new season."
