Mauricio Pochettino handed Son Heung-min his first Tottenham start as Spurs went in search of their first victory of the season at Sunderland on Sunday.

The north Londoners signed Son from Bayer Leverkusen ahead of transfer deadline day as the South Korean international opted for a move to White Hart Lane despite interest from Manchester City and Liverpool.

The 23-year-old, who scored a hat-trick for his country against Laos last week, was thrown in alongside Delle Ali and Nacer Chadli as part of a forward three behind Harry Kane.

Spurs sit 17th in the top flight with three points from their opening four games but travel to the Stadium of Light knowing victory could propel them into the top half.

Former Tottenham stars Jermain Defoe and Younes Kaboul started for the hosts, while Fabio Borini was handed a first start on his return to Wearside after joining the Black Cats on a permanent deal last month.
