Stoke City have confirmed the signing of Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

The midfielder was told he would not figure in the plans of Villa boss Paul Lambert for the forthcoming campaign and has opted to team up with former manager Mark Hughes at the Britannia Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland international has been looking to force through a move away from Villa Park after failing to feature in Lambert’s team since January.

The 27-year-old played under Hughes at Manchester City during the height of his career and returns to the Welshman’s stewardship as he looks to get his career back on track.
