England hero Sir Geoff Hurst was on hand to present Valance Primary School with a trophy for winning the Barking and Dagenham School’s World Cup on Saturday.

Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in England's 4-2 victory over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, took part in celebrations at Dagenham and Redbridge Football club to mark the 50th anniversary of the Three Lions' only international success.

Cllr Darren Rodwell said before the celebrations: “Barking and Dagenham played a massive part in England winning the 1966 World Cup and it is important that we continue to celebrate this.

“Every child who has participated in the tournament will have dreamt about winning the World Cup for England and it is great to have someone like Sir Geoff, who has done so, joining us at the event.”

Valence Primary School (Switzerland) fought off competition from Five Elms Primary School (Nigeria), George Carey Primary School (Lithuania) and Southwood Primary School (Spain) to win on Saturday, receiving a signed football legends photo by West Ham captain Mark Noble.

Sir Geoff Hurst, McDonald’s Director of Football, said: “Winning the World Cup was such an incredible moment in my life and I'm delighted to join the families of Barking and Dagenham to celebrate that achievement 50 years on.

"At this age the most important thing is that everyone has a fun day and enjoys the nation’s favourite sport.
