Ronaldo joins ‘fantastic Gareth Bale’ fan club

Gareth Bale has won over the fans at Read Madrid despite a slow start to his career at the Bernabeu — and now he has the likely world player of the year on side, too.

Bale was dogged by back and thigh injuries after his £86million move from Tottenham but has scored in his last three games, including a hat-trick against Valladolid on November 30.

He woke up on his 100th day in Spain today to the news that Cristiano Ronaldo is singing his praises, too. There were early reports that the Portugal captain was unimpressed with Madrid eclipsing his £80m transfer from Manchester United to Madrid but he is thrilled with his new team-mate’s contribution.

“Gareth is doing an incredible job,” said Ronaldo, who is favourite to win next month’s Ballon D’Or ahead of Lionel Messi. “He had a tough start, amongst other things because he suffered a small injury which ruled him out of several games.

“Plus, the pressure at Real Madrid is huge. But he’s on the right track now and we’re helping him.”

Ronaldo’s interview, reported Spanish newspaper Marca, which is the mouthpiece for the club, went on to say: “The fans love him and he’s a fantastic player who will help us win trophies.”

The 24-year-old Wales international has made nine appearances in La Liga and played four times in the Champions League, scoring nine goals in total.

Ronaldo last won the Ballon D’Or in 2008 and has since been repeatedly placed second to his great rival Messi.

The winner will be announced in Zurich on January 13.
