John Stones revealed Riyad Mahrez was "deflated" after his penalty miss cost Manchester City two precious points in their bid to retain the title.

City were on course for a creditable 0-0 draw at Anfield when Leroy Sane was floored by Virgil van Dijk inside the 18-yard box late on.

Referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot, but Mahrez spurned the opportunity to give City daylight at the top of the Premier League - blazing high over Alisson Becker's bar from 12 yards as Liverpool escaped with a goalless draw.

"He's deflated," said Stones after the game.

"If it was me I'd be the same. How he's played today, he gave everything and that's important. He missed but those things happen."

Stones added: "He was taking them well in training all week so we have to move on. We had to dig in at the end, those sorts of moments can go both ways. They could've got a late goal at the end too."

City remain top of the Premier League, albeit on goal difference, going into the international break and Stones drew positives from Sunday's stalemate.

He said: "They're a top team and to come here and get a clean sheet, is something we're proud of. Everyone chipped in and did their best."

Van Dijk was relieved that Mahrez failed to capitalise on the late penalty after his clumsy challenge nearly cost Liverpool valuable ground in the title race.

The 27-year-old said: "It is not smart to dive in there. It was a penalty and it shouldn't have happened, but I'm very happy we didn't concede."
