£25m is crazy price for Luis Fabiano, claims Harry Redknapp

Brazil nuts: Tottenham have targeted striker Luis Fabiano all summer but have been put off by Sevilla’s massive transfer demand

Harry Redknapp today revealed that Tottenham have made an enquiry for Brazilian star Luis Fabiano but admits his club, Sevilla, are asking for "crazy money".

The Spurs manager has been tracking the 29-year-old striker all summer as he searches for a top-class forward who can play on his own up front.

Chairman Daniel Levy has been in contact with Sevilla to negotiate a deal for Fabiano but the Spanish club are asking for £25million.

"He's a player that I like but they are talking crazy money for a player his age," Redknapp said. "He's got one year left on his contract, he's 29, and they want in excess of £24-25m. The figures just don't stack up.

"There is nothing close to being done but I'm not overly bothered. We had a few targets this summer and we got one of them [William Gallas]."

Redknapp is preparing for the visit of Wigan tomorrow still on a high after Spurs were drawn alongside holders Inter Milan in the Champions League group stages. Group A also includes Werder Bremen and FC Twente but it is the trip to the San Siro that has captured the imagination of the players, fans and manager.

Redknapp added: "It's a fantastic stadium and it will be great to take Tottenham there. It's a good game to look forward to as they are the outstanding Italian team.

"You only had to be there when we played Young Boys on Wednesday night to see what it meant to everybody. Who knows how far we can go?

"It's a challenge for me and for the players to perform in the Premier League and Champions League. Manchester United and Chelsea have been doing it for years. If you want to be mentioned in the same breath as those teams you have to do it in Europe and domestically."

England striker Jermain Defoe, who scored five times against Wigan last season, has put his groin operation on hold and could play tomorrow.

But goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is ruled out by a groin injury and will be replaced by Carlo Cudicini.
