Uefa promise ‘tight security’ for Europa League Final after Manchester terror attack

Uefa have promised ‘tight’ security measures will be in force ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League Final.

Uefa confirmed the match in Stockholm will go ahead as planned, despite the terror attack in Manchester last night which claimed 22 victims.

Manchester United are due to fly out to the Swedish capital Tuesday afternoon ahead of the game against Ajax only hours after a suicide bomber struck at the Manchester Arena following a concert by Ariana Grande.

Uefa have urged fans attending the Friends Arena to arrive early due to tight security but insist there is no indication the match itself is at risk.

“There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest [the Final] may be the target of attacks,” read a statement. “Uefa have been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the beginning of the project. A number of additional security measures were implemented following the attack in Stockholm in April.

“Uefa urge fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances.”

A statement issued by United read: “Everyone at Manchester United is deeply shocked by last night’s terrible events. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected.”

The club’s Megastore, museum, Red Cafe and stadium tour have all been closed to the public today, while manager Jose Mourinho’s press conference has been cancelled.

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin added: “I am deeply saddened by the horrible terrorist attack in Manchester last night. It shocks me that so many innocent people lost their lives and I would like to send my condolences to the families of those affected.”
