Andros Townsend hopes his man-of-the match performance in Europe will convince Andre Villas-Boas to start him against Swansea on Sunday.

Townsend, 22, was outstanding as Spurs beat Dinamo Tbilisi 5-0 in the first leg of their Europa League qualifying play-off.

He shone on the wing in the absence of Gareth Bale and scored Spurs’ opener. Townsend said: “Every time I get a chance I have to continue to be effective, to score goals and make assists.

“If I get another opportunity, hopefully I will do the same. Swansea are a good side.”

Villas-Boas said: “Andros has worked well in training, so we felt it was time to give him an opportunity. If we have the type of performance we had from him last night we can always count on him.”

Swansea also cruised to victory in Europe last night, beating Petrolul Ploiesti 5-1.
