Phil Foden signs lucrative Man City contract extension before Liverpool clash with wages set to skyrocket

Phil Foden has signed a lucrative new contract at Manchester City.

The England playmaker put pen to paper on a bumper three-year extension at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2027 on Friday, 48 hours before a huge Premier League showdown with Liverpool at Anfield.

Foden’s wages are reportedly set to jump from £40,000-per-week to £225,000-per-week, making the new deal worth around £55million in total.

The 22-year-old academy graduate, who has been with City since the age of nine, had been under contract until 2024 after a five-and-a-half year extension agreed in December 2018.

“It’s hard to put into words how happy I am to have signed this contract,” Foden said. “It’s a dream come true.

“I have been a City fan all my life. I’ve trained here for so many years and I’ve even been a ballboy. I love this club so much, so to know I am going to be a part of it until 2027 feels amazing.

“I’ve improved a lot in recent years and so much of that is down to Pep and his staff, who guide me every single day on the training field. Working with them gives me the best chance of improving even more and becoming the best player I can be.

“With the squad we have here, I feel I can keep learning and winning trophies. Those are the two most important things to me.

“I want to thank every single person at City because without them I would not be where I am today. All the Academy coaches I worked with, all the players I’ve played with and everyone who works behind the scenes. It’s an honour to be part of this football club.”

Foden has gone on to make 182 senior appearances and counting for City since his first-team debut in November 2017, scoring 52 goals, becoming an influential figure under Pep Guardiola while winning a host of major silverware including four Premier League titles, the FA Cup, four League Cups and two Community Shields, as well as reaching the final of the Champions League.

He also won back-to-back Premier League and PFA Young Player of the Year awards in 2020/21 and 2021/22.

Foden has also earned 18 senior international caps for England to date and will be a key figure for Gareth Southgate’s side at the forthcoming winter World Cup in Qatar.
