Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been nominated for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, but his team-mate Son Heung-min is a shock absentee from the six-man shortlist.

Son finished the season as the Premier League’s top scorer, winning the Golden Boot for the first time in his career.

The 29-year-old, however, has failed to be nominated for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, with the fact voting takes place before the end of the campaign likely hindering his prospects.

Son had still enjoyed a fine season before then, though, and he is a surprise absentee from a shortlist dominated by Liverpool players.

As always, the players themselves vote for the award and Liverpool have Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk among the contenders.

Kevin De Bruyne is Manchester City’s sole nominee, while Cristiano Ronaldo has made the shortlist after his first season back in the Premier League.

De Bruyne is the current holder of the award and, along with Ronaldo, is a two-time winner. Salah and Van Dijk have both won the award in the past too, while Kane and Mane have been nominated previously.

Mane’s nomination comes after he enjoyed one of his best seasons in a Liverpool shirt, with his tally of 23 goals only bettered by Salah. The Egyptian scored 31 goals and also laid on 15 assists too, which dwarfed Mane’s tally of two.

Van Dijk is the third Liverpool nominee and his place among the six contenders is recognition for his fine season at the back for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Manchester United endured their worst season in Premier League history, but Ronaldo still managed 18 League goals. That tally was only beaten by Salah and Son, with Kane managing one less than Ronaldo on 17.

De Bruyne, who sparkled for City towards the end of the season as they won the Premier League, finished the campaign with 19 goals and 14 assists.
