Per Mertesacker should be named Arsenal's Player of the Year, according to Richard Keys.

The Gunners captain made his first start in 13 months with a much-lauded display as Arsenal upset the odds to beat Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Ahead of the Wembley showpiece, Mertesacker had played just 37 minutes of Premier League football following knee surgery last summer.

Alexis Sanchez picked up the end-of-season award last week but Keys, a Sky Sports pundit before his sacking six years ago, feels the value of the German's performance was enough to earn the honour despite also missing out to Chilean for man of the match at Wembley.

"Never mind man of the match, Per Mertesacker should be named as a Arsenal's player of the year [sic]," Keyes wrote in his blog.

"He was awesome. If the win transformed Arsenal's season - and it did - then Mertesacker had more influence on that season in that 90 minutes than anybody else.
