Pep Guardiola has cast doubts over Bastian Schweinsteiger's fitness by revealing the new Manchester United midfielder has not been problem-free for three years.

Schweinsteiger, who spent 16 years at Bayern, moved to United earlier this summer but Guardiola stressed first and foremost the Red Devils have to get the World Cup winner back to peak condition.

"When he does not have injury problems, I am completely convinced he will do very well at Manchester United. He is a top, top player," the Bayern boss said of the 31-year-old.

"Unfortunately, during the last three years he was never in good condition. He is going to play really well there (at United). I really hope that is going to happen."

Louis van Gaal himself admitted that Schweinsteiger's second appearance had been a 'bad' performance in United's victory over San Jose last month.

"Players can play bad and certainly when you have only three days or six days training sessions in your legs and you have to play 45 minutes," said Van Gaal back in July.

"Everybody can say that it's easy to step in but it is not easy.

"I think the first match he played very well, and now he played bad. But that is also a process and certainly when you only have one week of training."
