One-time Chelsea target Hakan Calhanoglu looks set to sign for AC Milan after flying to Italy to undergo a medical.

The Turkish international arrived earlier on Sunday and travelled to the club’s Milanello training camp to put the finishing touches on a move from Bayer Leverkusen that could be worth a reported £20.8million.

"I am on my way to sign the contract in Milan," Calhanoglu told Bild.

"I want to thank Bayer Leverkusen, the directors and the fans for three fantastic years."

Calhanoglu, who had been on Antonio Conte’s shortlist for a summer transfer, has not played since January after Fifa banned him over a dispute relating to Trabzonspor, who claimed they had paid him €100,000 to sign for them in 2011.

The 23-year-old’s arrival continues a summer of ambitious spending from the Italian giants, who snatched another Chelsea target in Franck Kessie earlier this summer.

They have also brought in defenders Ricardo Rodriguez and Mateo Musacchio as well as one of Europe’s top young strikers – Andre Silva – and Sunderland forward Fabio Borini.
