Out walking: Pearson ‘nearly missed chance’

Nigel Pearson has revealed he almost missed the call to be Watford’s saviour because he was out walking in the Derbyshire countryside.

Pearson was appointed as the Hornets’ third head coach of the season last Friday following the sackings of Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores.

The two Spaniards both endured miserable stints at Vicarage Road this season, with Pearson looking to pull off another relegation escape mission - like he did with Leicester in 2015 - and lift Watford off the foot of the Premier League.

The 56-year-old has jumped at the challenge presented to him, but also revealed how he almost missed the call from Watford’s owners as he was out hiking.

“Well actually, somebody was trying to get hold of me and my phone was off precisely because of that,” Pearson told Watford's official website.

“I had been out in Derbyshire on the Wednesday and done a really good walk so Thursday morning when I heard about it, it was a bit of a surprise but I like I say I am delighted to be here.

“I don’t have voicemail. I picked up the messages and called back. Like I say, it was a surprise but I’m delighted to be here.

“To be not working and then have a chance of working at a Premier League club is a great chance to get back in and re-establish myself.”
