Harry Redknapp is set to hold talks with the Football Association this week as they look to progress their search for the next England manager.

The trio in charge of appointing Roy Hodgson’s successor — technical director Dan Ashworth, chief executive Martin Glenn and vice-chairman David Gill — are meeting with various leading figures in the game to canvass opinion after England’s humiliating exit to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to take the job and is likely to tell the three-man panel that he wants to be involved in some way going forward.

In his exclusive Standard Sport column, the 69-year-old wrote last week: “I would tell the FA there are plenty of young, talented English guys out there who want the opportunity and they should give one of them the chance. But you can’t expose a young manager to one of the most pressurised jobs in world football on their own. Put an older head in there to give them guidance and take some of the heat off. I’d love to do it. The chances of it happening are very slim, I know that.”

It remains to be seen whether the FA view Redknapp as a serious contender.

They overlooked him for the post when Fabio Capello left in 2012 despite his Tottenham team then fighting for Champions League football but the four men who opted for Hodgson — David Bernstein, Alex Horne, Sir Trevor Brooking and Adrian Bevington — have all since left the FA. It is believed the FA are still keen on speaking with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger but the Frenchman’s representatives declined to comment when contacted this morning.

Wenger has always publicly stated the job should be filled by an Englishman and will not consider leaving the Gunners before his current deal expires at the end of next season.

The FA had originally suggested they would be prepared to wait for the right candidate but the reluctance of Gareth Southgate to take the job as caretaker has diminished that possibility.

However, Redknapp could be another interim option given he is out of work, having recently ended a temporary stint as an adviser at Derby and having had two games in charge of Jordan.
