Gareth Southgate says "the hard work starts now" after signing a four-year contract to become England's new manager.

Southgate was given an opportunity to take charge of the Three Lions on an interim basis following Sam Allardyce's departure and led the nation to a total of seven points from three World Cup qualifiers.

The 46-year-old impressed an FA selection panel of Martin Glenn, Dan Ashworth and Greg Clarke, who have unanimously agreed Southgate is the man to take the nation forward.

"I am extremely proud to be appointed England manager," he told the FA's official website.

"However, I'm also conscious that getting the job is one thing, now I want to do the job successfully.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there's huge potential.

"I'm determined to give everything I have to give the country a team that they're proud of and one that they're going to enjoy watching play and develop.

"For me, the hard work starts now."

Southgate's contract will see him lead England at the 2018 World Cup and 2020 European Championships - provided they qualify.

Former England defender Southgate, who won 57 senior caps, has also spent time in charge of England's Under-21 side with his only managerial experience outside of the national set up a three-year spell at Middlesbrough.
