Former Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne is training with Crystal Palace in a bid to regain his fitness and potentially earn a contract with his former club.

The full-back, who came through Palace's academy before joining Southampton and then Liverpool, was released by the Merseyside club having missed the whole of last season through injury with his last appearance coming in December 2018.

Palace have signed right-back Nathan Ferguson this summer and youngster Tyrick Mitchell is doing well deputising for Patrick van Aanholt at left-back, but the Eagles could still be open to adding the ex-England international to their ranks should he prove his fitness.

A Palace statement read: "Nathaniel Clyne is training with the squad for the rest of September, as he is out of contract after leaving Liverpool F.C. earlier this summer.

"The Palace Academy graduate made 137 first-team appearances for the Eagles, before joining Southampton and then Liverpool, making more than 100 appearances for both clubs.

"Everyone at Crystal Palace F.C. is delighted to welcome Nathaniel back for this short period of time, as he aims to regain his fitness."
