Chelsea have secured the long-term future of one of their most talented youngsters by handing Nathan Ake a new five-year contract.

Ake, who joined from Feyenoord in 2011, was a regular member of the first team squad in the second half of last season and ended up making six appearances.

The 18-year-old was even named on the bench for the Europa League Final against Benfica, but was surprisingly left out of the club’s pre-season tours this summer to South East Asia and USA.

Ake has been working with the Under 21’s instead, yet is expected to be loaned out to a team in the Premier League or Championship this term.

However, Chelsea regard Ake as a bright prospect and made a move to give him a new deal.

Ake said: “I'm very happy that Chelsea is rewarding me with a new contract for my effort and development the last years.

'I would like to thank everybody at the club for everything they did for me. Thanks to them I have come so far. I won't let them down and will keep on working as hard as I can.”

Chelsea also intend to hand Nathaniel Chalobah a new contract, while talks have also begun with Juan Mata over handing him an extension.
