Middlesbrough 1 Crystal Palace 0: Lewis Wing stunner sends Eagles crashing out of EFL Cup

Crystal Palace were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by former boss Tony Pulis at the Riverside.

On a disappointing night for Palace, a stunning 25-yard effort from Lewis Wing at the end of the first half won it for Middlesbrough.

Roy Hodgson left Wilfried Zaha in London along with most of the side that started against Arsenal and, without them, Palace were poor.

The Eagles were woeful in the first and, although they improved after the break, they could not find an equaliser.

Hodgson made eight changes and the team he sent out were awful in the first half and fell behind in stoppage time at the end of the half when Wing scored from range.

Palace felt there was a handball by Middlesbrough midfielder Martin Braithwaite in the build up but the goal stood.

Hodgson, clearly unhappy with what he had seen, sent Palace out early for the start of the season half and the visitors did improve after the break.

Middlesbrough, as you would expect for a team managed by Pulis, were difficult to break down but Palace did create chances.

The closest they did come was when Meyer fired into the side-netting from a tight angle.

Jeffrey Schlupp sliced an effort wide on the turn and Andros Townsend had a curling shot from range saved.

But it was a night to forget for Palace.
