Anthony Martial's second-half goal sealed a vital 1-0 win for Manchester United against Everton on Sunday as the victory ensured the Red Devils leapfrog West Ham in fifth place in the Premier League standings.

United took advantage of some poor defending from the visitors to take the lead in the 53rd minute after Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and substitute Timothy Fosu-Mensah combined to set up Martial, who drove home from close range at the far post to not only score the winner but also net United's 1,000th league home goal.

The victory means United now sit in fifth place in the league table with 53 points, two points more than West Ham, who were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to London rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Louis van Gaal's side also trail fierce rivals Manchester City by just a single point as both sides attempt to clinch the final Champions League spot this season.

Arsenal are in third place with 58 points while Tottenham and Leicester are expected to play in Europe's elite competition next term too, sitting in second and first place respectively.
