Liverpool have been dealt a double injury blow after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum both picked up knee problems during Saturday's 1-0 win at Brighton.

Alexander-Arnold went down during the warm-up at the AMEX Stadium with what appeared to be an ankle issue but emerged from the tunnel before kick-off to complete 90 minutes.

Klopp said after the game: "It was the last situation in the warm-up, I think he stepped on the ball – I didn’t see the situation, I only saw him going down. Immediately [you see] Trent on the ground, he’s a hard boy so that’s not a good sign.

“I don’t know exactly what it was and I hope it was absolutely nothing; it was not nothing because it was really painful, but I hope it will not take long until he doesn’t feel it anymore."

However, subsequent assessment by the club's medical staff has highlighted a knee issue that could keep the teenage full-back sidelined for up to four weeks.

It had been feared that Alexander-Arnold would require surgery and an even lengthier period out of action but, with that course of action no longer required, there is confidence at Melwood that the teenager could even be back ahead of his tentatively prescribed schedule.

Wijnaldum, meanwhile, is a doubt for this weekend's meeting with Crystal Palace at Anfield after sustaining a knock to his knee.

The Dutchman will be assessed day by day and is yet to be ruled out of Saturday's game, though his chances of featuring appear slim given Klopp's aversion to taking risks with his players' fitness.
