Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp expects Virgil van Dijk to be ready to face Arsenal in the Community Shield despite sustaining a cut above his eye against RB Salzburg.

The Reds completed their pre-season programme with a 2-2 draw at the home of the Austrian champions on Tuesday afternoon.

However, they were hit by an injury blow early in the second half as Van Dijk went down following a corner.

Replays showed the Dutchman had taken an inadvertent elbow to the top of his head, which opened a wound that forced his withdrawal.

But, speaking at full-time, Klopp was optimistic about the talismanic defender’s chances of featuring at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The manager said: “Virg only looks like he has a piercing now and has a plaster on it.

“It should not be, and is, no problem. In the moment it is of course not cool but there will not be a problem.”
