Liverpool have confirmed that captain Steven Gerrard will move to MLS in the United States when his contract expires in June.

Gerrard told supporters he 'could not contemplate' ever lining up against the Reds in a competitive match but vowed to carry on playing abroad.

His comments threw weight behind reports he is bound for America in the summer and Liverpool have since confirmed he will move stateside at the end of the season, with LA Galaxy the favourites to land his signature.

The club's official Twitter account said: "Steven Gerrard confirms he will move to the USA this summer".

The teaser post on social media was prompting fans to tune in to the club's channels at 5pm on Saturday for an exclusive interview with the departing captain.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup third round match against AFC Wimbledon, manager Brendan Rodgers said: "I think if you look at Steven's statement then that makes it clear. He certainly knew my feelings on me wanting him to be here.

"He has been a brilliant captain for me in my time here. I naturally wanted him to stay here. His role is slightly different now, he still sees himself wanting to go on and play for a couple of years. Naturally at this level it was going to taper over the next couple years."
